We establish the following results on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability, $1<p<\infty$, of the operator function arising from a continuous scalar function $f$ and self-adjoint operators defined on a fixed separable Hilbert space:

1. (i) $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every bounded self-adjoint operator if and only if $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$;

2. (ii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n-1)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$ and $f^{(n)}\in C_{0}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator;

3. (iii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n-1$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable and $n$ times Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator.

We also prove that if $f\in B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiable, $1\leqslant q<\infty$, at every self-adjoint operator. These results generalize and extend analogous results of Kissin et al. (Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)108(3) (2014), 327–349) to arbitrary $n$ and unbounded operators as well as substantially extend the results of Azamov et al. (Canad. J. Math.61(2) (2009), 241–263); Coine et al. (J. Funct. Anal.; doi:10.1016/j.jfa.2018.09.005); Peller (J. Funct. Anal.233(2) (2006), 515–544) on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability of $f$ in a certain Wiener class, Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{2}$-differentiability of $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$ with $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, and Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiability of $f$ in the intersection of the Besov classes $B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$. As an application, we extend ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-estimates for operator Taylor remainders to a broad set of symbols. Finally, we establish explicit formulas for Fréchet differentials and Gâteaux derivatives.

In this article we are interested in the rigorous construction of WKB expansions for hyperbolic boundary value problems in the strip $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times [0,1]$. In this geometry, a new inversibility condition has to be imposed to construct the WKB expansion. This new condition is due to selfinteraction phenomenon which naturally appear when several boundary conditions are imposed. More precisely, by selfinteraction we mean that some rays can regenerated themselves after some rebounds against the sides of the strip. This phenomenon is not new and has already been studied in Benoit (Geometric optics expansions for hyperbolic corner problems, I: self-interaction phenomenon, Anal. PDE9(6) (2016), 1359–1418), Sarason and Smoller (Geometrical optics and the corner problem, Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal.56 (1974/75), 34–69) in the corner geometry. In this framework the existence of such selfinteracting rays is linked to specific geometries of the characteristic variety and may seem to be somewhat anecdotal. However for the strip geometry such rays become generic. The new inversibility condition, used to construct the WKB expansion, is a microlocalized version of the one characterizing the uniform in time strong well-posedness (Benoit, Lower exponential strong well-posedness of hyperbolic boundary value problems in a strip (preprint)). It is interesting to point here that such a situation already occurs in the half space geometry(Kreiss, Initial boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems, Comm. Pure Appl. Math.23 (1970), 277–298).

We construct the $p$-adic standard $L$-functions for ordinary families of Hecke eigensystems of the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ using the doubling method. We explain a clear and simple strategy of choosing the local sections for the Siegel Eisenstein series on the doubling group $\operatorname{Sp}(4n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$, which guarantees the nonvanishing of local zeta integrals and allows us to $p$-adically interpolate the restrictions of the Siegel Eisenstein series to $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}\times \operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$.

In this paper, we consider the Stokes equations in a perforated domain. When the number of holes increases while their radius tends to 0, it is proven in Desvillettes et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 131 (2008) 941–967], under suitable dilution assumptions, that the solution is well approximated asymptotically by solving a Stokes–Brinkman equation. We provide here quantitative estimates in $L^{p}$-norms of this convergence.

In this paper we prove that the set of translation structures for which the corresponding vertical translation flows are disjoint with its inverse contains a $G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$-dense subset in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}}$. This is in contrast to hyperelliptic case, where for every translation structure the associated vertical flow is reversible, i.e., it is isomorphic to its inverse by an involution. To prove the main result, we study limits of the off-diagonal 3-joinings of special representations of vertical translation flows. Moreover, we construct a locally defined continuous embedding of the moduli space into the space of measure-preserving flows to obtain the $G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$-condition. Moreover, as a by-product we get that in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space there is a dense subset of translation structures whose vertical flow is reversible.

The minimal ramification problem may be considered as a quantitative version of the inverse Galois problem. For a nontrivial finite group $G$, let $m(G)$ be the minimal integer $m$ for which there exists a $G$-Galois extension $N/\mathbb{Q}$ that is ramified at exactly $m$ primes (including the infinite one). So, the problem is to compute or to bound $m(G)$.

In this paper, we bound the ramification of extensions $N/\mathbb{Q}$ obtained as a specialization of a branched covering $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:C\rightarrow \mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$. This leads to novel upper bounds on $m(G)$, for finite groups $G$ that are realizable as the Galois group of a branched covering. Some instances of our general results are:

Our methods are based on sieve theory results, in particular on the Green–Tao–Ziegler theorem on prime values of linear forms in two variables, on the theory of specialization in arithmetic geometry, and on finite group theory.

We extend T. Y. Thomas’s approach to projective structures, over the complex analytic category, by involving the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$-connections. This way, a better control of projective flatness is obtained and, consequently, we have, for example, the following application: if the twistor space of a quaternionic manifold $P$ is endowed with a complex projective structure then $P$ can be locally identified, through quaternionic diffeomorphisms, with the quaternionic projective space.

We determine the parity of the Langlands parameter of a conjugate self-dual supercuspidal representation of $\text{GL}(n)$ over a non-archimedean local field by means of the local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence. It gives a partial generalization of a previous result on the self-dual case by Prasad and Ramakrishnan.

Subconvexity bounds on the critical line are proved for general Epstein zeta-functions of $k$-ary quadratic forms. This is related to sup-norm bounds for unitary Eisenstein series on $\text{GL}(k)$ associated with the maximal parabolic of type $(k-1,1)$, and the exact sup-norm exponent is determined to be $(k-2)/8$ for $k\geqslant 4$. In particular, if $k$ is odd, this exponent is not in $\frac{1}{4}\mathbb{Z}$, which is relevant in the context of Sarnak’s purity conjecture and shows that it can in general not directly be generalized to Eisenstein series.

We prove the connectedness of the Prym eigenforms loci in genus four (for real multiplication by some order of discriminant $D$), for any $D$. These loci were discovered by McMullen in 2006.

Given a $2$-commutative diagram

in a symmetric monoidal $(\infty ,2)$-category $\mathscr{E}$ where $X,Y\in \mathscr{E}$ are dualizable objects and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ admits a right adjoint we construct a natural morphism $\mathsf{Tr}_{\mathscr{E}}(F_{X})\xrightarrow[{}]{~~~~~}\mathsf{Tr}_{\mathscr{E}}(F_{Y})$between the traces of $F_{X}$ and $F_{Y}$, respectively. We then apply this formalism to the case when $\mathscr{E}$ is the $(\infty ,2)$-category of $k$-linear presentable categories which in combination of various calculations in the setting of derived algebraic geometry gives a categorical proof of the classical Atiyah–Bott formula (also known as the Holomorphic Lefschetz fixed point formula).

We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $\operatorname{NA}(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read [Banach spaces with no proximinal subspaces of codimension 2, Israel J. Math. (to appear)] and Rmoutil [Norm-attaining functionals need not contain 2-dimensional subspaces, J. Funct. Anal. 272 (2017), 918–928]. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $\operatorname{NA}(X)$ for the original norm is not “too large”. The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_{0}$ and having a countable system of norming functionals, in particular, to separable Banach spaces containing $c_{0}$. We also provide some geometric properties of the norms we have constructed.

We finalize the analysis of the trace formula initiated in S. A. Altuğ [Beyond endoscopy via the trace formula-I: Poisson summation and isolation of special representations, Compos. Math.151(10) (2015), 1791–1820] and developed in S. A. Altuğ [Beyond endoscopy via the trace formula-II: asymptotic expansions of Fourier transforms and bounds toward the Ramanujan conjecture. Submitted, preprint, 2015, Available at:arXiv:1506.08911.pdf], and calculate the asymptotic expansion of the beyond endoscopic averages for the standard $L$-functions attached to weight $k\geqslant 3$ cusp forms on $\mathit{GL}(2)$ (cf. Theorem 1.1). This, in particular, constitutes the first example of beyond endoscopy executed via the Arthur–Selberg trace formula, as originally proposed in R. P. Langlands [Beyond endoscopy, in Contributions to Automorphic Forms, Geometry, and Number Theory, pp. 611–698 (The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, MD, 2004), chapter 22]. As an application we also give a new proof of the analytic continuation of the $L$-function attached to Ramanujan’s $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$-function.

The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety $X$ is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points on $X$. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.

We prove a compactness theorem for metrics with bounded integral curvature on a fixed closed surface $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$. As a corollary we obtain a new convergence result for sequences of metrics with conical singularities, where an accumulation of singularities is allowed.

Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety, $T\subseteq X$ a subvariety of dimension $m$ (possibly $T=X$) and $a:X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ injects into $\text{Pic}^{0}(T)$; let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ a general element.

We introduce two new ingredients for the study of linear systems on $X$. First of all, we show the existence of a factorization of the map $a$, called the eventual map of $L$ on $T$, which controls the behavior of the linear systems $|L\otimes \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}|_{|T}$, asymptotically with respect to the pullbacks to the connected étale covers $X^{(d)}\rightarrow X$ induced by the $d$-th multiplication map of $A$.

Second, we define the so-called continuous rank function$x\mapsto h_{a}^{0}(X_{|T},L+xM)$, where $M$ is the pullback of an ample divisor of $A$. This function extends to a continuous function of $x\in \mathbb{R}$, which is differentiable except possibly at countably many points; when $X=T$ we compute the left derivative explicitly.

As an application, we give quick short proofs of a wide range of new Clifford–Severi inequalities, i.e., geographical bounds of the form

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibers and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fiber is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. It is proved that the image under the period map of a divisor in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_{g}$. It follows that a Hodge locus in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ has codimension at least 2.

We give a formula relating the order of the Brauer group of a surface fibered over a curve over a finite field to the order of the Tate–Shafarevich group of the Jacobian of the generic fiber. The formula implies that the Brauer group of a smooth and proper surface over a finite field is a square if it is finite.

We study a rich family of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms and we show that each ergodic measure is approached by hyperbolic sets in weak$\ast$-topology and in entropy. For hyperbolic ergodic measures, it is a classical result of A. Katok. The novelty here is to deal with non-hyperbolic ergodic measures. As a consequence, we obtain the continuity of topological entropy.
