We prove, under some assumptions, a Greenberg type equality relating the characteristic power series of the Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}$ of higher symmetric powers of the Galois representation associated to a Hida family and congruence ideals associated to (different) higher symmetric powers of that Hida family. We use $R=T$ theorems and a sort of induction based on branching laws for adjoint representations. This method also applies to other Langlands transfers, like the transfer from $\text{GSp}(4)$ to $U(4)$. In that case we obtain a corollary for abelian surfaces.

In this paper, we develop three different subjects. We study and prove alternative versions of Hrushovski’s ‘stabilizer theorem’, we generalize part of the basic theory of definably amenable NIP groups to $\text{NTP}_{2}$ theories, and finally, we use all this machinery to study groups with f-generic types definable in bounded pseudo real closed fields.

Two measurable sets $S,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d}$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ with support in $S$ whose Fourier transform vanishes on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér–Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of a dense set of projections). We also give an application to the unique continuation of eigenfunctions of second-order PDEs with constant coefficients.

We study the equivariant oriented cohomology ring $\mathtt{h}_{T}(G/P)$ of partial flag varieties using the moment map approach. We define the right Hecke action on this cohomology ring, and then prove that the respective Bott–Samelson classes in $\mathtt{h}_{T}(G/P)$ can be obtained by applying this action to the fundamental class of the identity point, hence generalizing previously known results of Chow groups by Brion, Knutson, Peterson, Tymoczko and others. Our main result concerns the equivariant oriented cohomology theory $\mathfrak{h}$ corresponding to the 2-parameter Todd genus. We give a new interpretation of Deodhar’s parabolic Kazhdan–Lusztig basis, i.e., we realize it as some cohomology classes (the parabolic Kazhdan–Lusztig (KL) Schubert classes) in $\mathfrak{h}_{T}(G/P)$. We make a positivity conjecture, and a conjecture about the relationship of such classes with smoothness of Schubert varieties. We also prove the latter in several special cases.

We study the germs at the origin of $G$-representation varieties and the degree 1 cohomology jump loci of fundamental groups of quasi-projective manifolds. Using the Morgan–Dupont model associated to a convenient compactification of such a manifold, we relate these germs to those of their infinitesimal counterparts, defined in terms of flat connections on those models. When the linear algebraic group $G$ is either $\text{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{C})$ or its standard Borel subgroup and the depth of the jump locus is 1, this dictionary works perfectly, allowing us to describe in this way explicit irreducible decompositions for the germs of these embedded jump loci. On the other hand, if either $G=\text{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ for some $n\geqslant 3$, or the depth is greater than 1, then certain natural inclusions of germs are strict.

We investigate interesting connections between Mizohata type vector fields and microlocal regularity of nonlinear first-order PDEs, establishing results in Denjoy–Carleman classes and real analyticity results in the linear case.

We construct a weak Hilbert space that is a twisted Hilbert space.

We suggest an analog of the Bass–Quillen conjecture for smooth affinoid algebras over a complete non-archimedean field. We prove this in the rank-1 case, i.e. for the Picard group. For complete discretely valued fields and regular affinoid algebras that admit a regular model (automatic if the residue characteristic is zero) we prove a similar statement for the Grothendieck group of vector bundles $K_{0}$.

Estimating averages of Dirichlet convolutions $1\ast \unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$, for some real Dirichlet character $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ of fixed modulus, over the sparse set of values of binary forms defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ has been the focus of extensive investigations in recent years, with spectacular applications to Manin’s conjecture for Châtelet surfaces. We introduce a far-reaching generalisation of this problem, in particular replacing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ by Jacobi symbols with both arguments having varying size, possibly tending to infinity. The main results of this paper provide asymptotic estimates and lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for the corresponding averages. All of this is performed over arbitrary number fields by adapting a technique of Daniel specific to $1\ast 1$. This is the first time that divisor sums over values of binary forms are asymptotically evaluated over any number field other than $\mathbb{Q}$. Our work is a key step in the proof, given in subsequent work, of the lower bound predicted by Manin’s conjecture for all del Pezzo surfaces over all number fields, under mild assumptions on the Picard number.

We consider the unique recovery of a non-compactly supported and non-periodic perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in an unbounded cylindrical domain, also called waveguide, from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove recovery of a general class of electric potentials from the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Dirichlet data is supported on slightly more than half of the boundary and the Neumann data is taken on the other half of the boundary. We apply this result in different contexts including recovery of some general class of non-compactly supported coefficients from measurements on a bounded subset and recovery of an electric potential, supported on an unbounded cylinder, of a Schrödinger operator in a slab.

In this paper, we relate Lie algebroids to Costello’s version of derived geometry. For instance, we show that each Lie algebroid – and the natural generalization to dg Lie algebroids – provides an (essentially unique) $L_{\infty }$ space. More precisely, we construct a faithful functor from the category of Lie algebroids to the category of $L_{\infty }$ spaces. Then we show that for each Lie algebroid $L$, there is a fully faithful functor from the category of representations up to homotopy of $L$ to the category of vector bundles over the associated $L_{\infty }$ space. Indeed, this functor sends the adjoint complex of $L$ to the tangent bundle of the $L_{\infty }$ space. Finally, we show that a shifted symplectic structure on a dg Lie algebroid produces a shifted symplectic structure on the associated $L_{\infty }$ space.

We explore the connection between $K3$ categories and 0-cycles on holomorphic symplectic varieties. In this paper, we focus on Kuznetsov’s noncommutative $K3$ category associated to a nonsingular cubic 4-fold.

By introducing a filtration on the $\text{CH}_{1}$-group of a cubic 4-fold $Y$, we conjecture a sheaf/cycle correspondence for the associated $K3$ category ${\mathcal{A}}_{Y}$. This is a noncommutative analog of O’Grady’s conjecture concerning derived categories of $K3$ surfaces. We study instances of our conjecture involving rational curves in cubic 4-folds, and verify the conjecture for sheaves supported on low degree rational curves.

Our method provides systematic constructions of (a) the Beauville–Voisin filtration on the $\text{CH}_{0}$-group and (b) algebraically coisotropic subvarieties of a holomorphic symplectic variety which is a moduli space of stable objects in ${\mathcal{A}}_{Y}$.

Let $(G,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ be a pair of a reductive group $G$ over the $p$-adic integers and a minuscule cocharacter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ of $G$ defined over an unramified extension. We introduce and study ‘$(G,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$-displays’ which generalize Zink’s Witt vector displays. We use these to define certain Rapoport–Zink formal schemes purely group theoretically, i.e. without $p$-divisible groups.

Colmez [Périodes des variétés abéliennes a multiplication complexe, Ann. of Math. (2)138(3) (1993), 625–683; available at http://www.math.jussieu.fr/∼colmez] conjectured a product formula for periods of abelian varieties over number fields with complex multiplication and proved it in some cases. His conjecture is equivalent to a formula for the Faltings height of CM abelian varieties in terms of the logarithmic derivatives at $s=0$ of certain Artin $L$-functions. In a series of articles we investigate the analog of Colmez’s theory in the arithmetic of function fields. There abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and their higher-dimensional generalizations, so-called $A$-motives. In the present article we prove the product formula for the Carlitz module and we compute the valuations of the periods of a CM $A$-motive at all finite places in terms of Artin $L$-series. The latter is achieved by investigating the local shtukas associated with the $A$-motive.

Let $L/F$ be a quadratic extension of totally real number fields. For any prime $p$ unramified in $L$, we construct a $p$-adic $L$-function interpolating the central values of the twisted triple product $L$-functions attached to a $p$-nearly ordinary family of unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\text{Res}_{L\times F/F}(\text{GL}_{2})$. Furthermore, when $L/\mathbb{Q}$ is a real quadratic number field and $p$ is a split prime, we prove a $p$-adic Gross–Zagier formula relating the values of the $p$-adic $L$-function outside the range of interpolation to the syntomic Abel–Jacobi image of generalized Hirzebruch–Zagier cycles.

Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k\subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford–Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. We also obtain an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. These results are special cases of a more general statement for the image of a natural adelic representation of the fundamental group of a Shimura variety.

In this paper, we construct the first examples of complex surfaces of general type with arbitrarily large geometric genus whose canonical maps induce non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus $g=4$, and on the other hand, we prove that there is no complex surface of general type whose canonical map induces a hyperelliptic fibrations of genus $g\geqslant 4$ if the geometric genus is large.

Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with associated symmetric space $D$, and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\subset G$ be a cocompact arithmetic group. Let $\mathscr{L}$ be a lattice inside a $\mathbb{Z}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$-module arising from a rational finite-dimensional complex representation of $G$. Bergeron and Venkatesh recently gave a precise conjecture about the growth of the order of the torsion subgroup $H_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k};\mathscr{L})_{\operatorname{tors}}$ as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k}$ ranges over a tower of congruence subgroups of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$. In particular, they conjectured that the ratio $\log |H_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k};\mathscr{L})_{\operatorname{tors}}|/[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{k}]$ should tend to a nonzero limit if and only if $i=(\dim (D)-1)/2$ and $G$ is a group of deficiency $1$. Furthermore, they gave a precise expression for the limit. In this paper, we investigate computationally the cohomology of several (non-cocompact) arithmetic groups, including $\operatorname{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ for $n=3,4,5$ and $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathscr{O})$ for various rings of integers, and observe its growth as a function of level. In all cases where our dataset is sufficiently large, we observe excellent agreement with the same limit as in the predictions of Bergeron–Venkatesh. Our data also prompts us to make two new conjectures on the growth of torsion not covered by the Bergeron–Venkatesh conjecture.

We show that the image of the Abel–Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel–Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also recover a result of Deligne on complete intersections of Hodge level 1.

In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the maximum of partial sums of certain cubic exponential sums, commonly known as ‘Birch sums’. Our main theorem gives upper and lower bounds (of nearly the same order of magnitude) for the distribution of large values of this maximum, that hold in a wide uniform range. This improves a recent result of Kowalski and Sawin. The proofs use a blend of probabilistic methods, harmonic analysis techniques, and deep tools from algebraic geometry. The results can also be generalized to other types of $\ell$-adic trace functions. In particular, the lower bound of our result also holds for partial sums of Kloosterman sums. As an application, we show that there exist $x\in [1,p]$ and $a\in \mathbb{F}_{p}^{\times }$ such that $|\sum _{n\leqslant x}\exp (2\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}i(n^{3}+an)/p)|\geqslant (2/\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}+o(1))\sqrt{p}\log \log p$. The uniformity of our results suggests that this bound is optimal, up to the value of the constant.
