In the course of this century man's control over his natural environment and its effects has vastly increased. As a result, death rates from many illnesses caused by environmental factors have fallen markedly. This is very evident in the field of infant mortality. In 1906–10, of every 1000 babies born alive in this country, 117 died before their first birthday. By 1971–75 this figure had dropped to less than 17.
