Each metric graph has canonically associated to it a polarized real torus called its tropical Jacobian. A fundamental real-valued invariant associated to each polarized real torus is its tropical moment. We give an explicit and efficiently computable formula for the tropical moment of a tropical Jacobian in terms of potential theory on the underlying metric graph. We show that there exists a universal linear relation between the tropical moment, a certain capacity called the tau invariant, and the total length of a metric graph. To put our formula in a broader context, we relate our work to the computation of heights attached to principally polarized abelian varieties.

Postnikov constructed a cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The poset of cells can be described (in particular) via Grassmann necklaces. We study certain quiver Grassmannians for the cyclic quiver admitting a cellular decomposition, whose cells are naturally labeled by Grassmann necklaces. We show that the posets of cells coincide with the reversed cell posets of the cellular decomposition of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. We investigate algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties of these quiver Grassmannians. In particular, we describe the irreducible components, study the action of the automorphism groups of the underlying representations, and describe the moment graphs. We also construct a resolution of singularities for each irreducible component; the resolutions are defined as quiver Grassmannians for an extended cyclic quiver.

We show that all self-adjoint extensions of semibounded Sturm–Liouville operators with limit-circle endpoint(s) can be obtained via an additive singular form-bounded self-adjoint perturbation of rank equal to the deficiency indices, say $d\in \{1,2\}$. This characterization generalizes the well-known analog for semibounded Sturm–Liouville operators with regular endpoints. Explicitly, every self-adjoint extension of the minimal operator can be written as

The merging of boundary triples with perturbation theory provides a more holistic view of the operator’s matrix-valued spectral measures: identifying not just the location of the spectrum, but also certain directional information.

As an example, self-adjoint extensions of the classical Jacobi differential equation (which has two limit-circle endpoints) are obtained, and their spectra are analyzed with tools both from the theory of boundary triples and perturbation theory.

Adjacent dyadic systems are pivotal in analysis and related fields to study continuous objects via collections of dyadic ones. In our prior work (joint with Jiang, Olson, and Wei), we describe precise necessary and sufficient conditions for two dyadic systems on the real line to be adjacent. Here, we extend this work to all dimensions, which turns out to have many surprising difficulties due to the fact that $d+1$, not $2^d$, grids is the optimal number in an adjacent dyadic system in $\mathbb {R}^d$. As a byproduct, we show that a collection of $d+1$ dyadic systems in $\mathbb {R}^d$ is adjacent if and only if the projection of any two of them onto any coordinate axis are adjacent on $\mathbb {R}$. The underlying geometric structures that arise in this higher-dimensional generalization are interesting objects themselves, ripe for future study; these lead us to a compact, geometric description of our main result. We describe these structures, along with what adjacent dyadic (and n-adic, for any n) systems look like, from a variety of contexts, relating them to previous work, as well as illustrating a specific exa.

Let $f(z)=\sum _{n=0}^\infty a_n z^n$ be an entire function on the complex plane, and let ${\mathcal R} f(z) = \sum _{n=0}^\infty a_n X_n z^n$ be its randomization induced by a standard sequence $(X_n)_n$ of independent Bernoulli, Steinhaus, or Gaussian random variables. In this paper, we characterize those functions $f(z)$ such that ${\mathcal R} f(z)$ is almost surely in the Fock space ${\mathcal F}_{\alpha }^p$ for any $p, \alpha \in (0,\infty )$. Then such a characterization, together with embedding theorems which are of independent interests, is used to obtain a Littlewood-type theorem, also known as regularity improvement under randomization within the scale of Fock spaces. Other results obtained in this paper include: (a) a characterization of random analytic functions in the mixed-norm space ${\mathcal F}(\infty , q, \alpha )$, an endpoint version of Fock spaces, via entropy integrals; (b) a complete description of random lacunary elements in Fock spaces; and (c) a complete description of random multipliers between different Fock spaces.

We consider a quiver with potential (QP) $(Q(D),W(D))$ and an iced quiver with potential (IQP) $(\overline {Q}(D), F(D), \overline {W}(D))$ associated with a Postnikov Diagram D and prove that their mutations are compatible with the geometric exchanges of D. This ensures that we may define a QP $(Q,W)$ and an IQP $(\overline {Q},F,\overline {W})$ for a Grassmannian cluster algebra up to mutation equivalence. It shows that $(Q,W)$ is always rigid (thus nondegenerate) and Jacobi-finite. Moreover, in fact, we show that it is the unique nondegenerate (thus rigid) QP by using a general result of Geiß, Labardini-Fragoso, and Schröer (2016, Advances in Mathematics 290, 364–452).

Then we show that, within the mutation class of the QP for a Grassmannian cluster algebra, the quivers determine the potentials up to right equivalence. As an application, we verify that the auto-equivalence group of the generalized cluster category ${\mathcal {C}}_{(Q, W)}$ is isomorphic to the cluster automorphism group of the associated Grassmannian cluster algebra ${{\mathcal {A}}_Q}$ with trivial coefficients.

We study generators of the fundamental group of the group of symplectomorphisms $\operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}} (\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,5\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2, \omega )$ for some particular symplectic forms. It was observed by Kȩdra (2009, Archivum Mathematicum 45) that there are many symplectic 4-manifolds $(M, \omega )$, where M is neither rational nor ruled, that admit no circle action and $\pi _1 (\operatorname {\mathrm {Ham}} (M,\omega ))$ is nontrivial. On the other hand, it follows from Abreu and McDuff (2000, Journal of the American Mathematical Society 13, 971–1009), Anjos and Eden (2019, Michigan Mathematical Journal 68, 71–126), Anjos and Pinsonnault (2013, Mathematische Zeitschrift 275, 245–292), and Pinsonnault (2008, Compositio Mathematica 144, 787–810) that the fundamental group of the group $ \operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}}_h(\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,k\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2,\omega )$, of symplectomorphisms that act trivially on homology, with $k \leq 4$, is generated by circle actions on the manifold. We show that, for some particular symplectic forms $\omega $, the set of all Hamiltonian circle actions generates a proper subgroup in $\pi _1(\operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}}_{h}(\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,5\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2,\omega )).$ Our work depends on Delzant classification of toric symplectic manifolds, Karshon’s classification of Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces, and the computation of Seidel elements of some circle actions.

The classical Gelfand–Naimark theorems provide important insight into the structure of general and of commutative $C^*$-algebras. It is shown that these can be generalized to certain ordered $^*$-algebras. More precisely, for $\sigma $-bounded closed ordered $^*$-algebras, a faithful representation as operators is constructed. Similarly, for commutative such algebras, a faithful representation as complex-valued functions is constructed if an additional necessary regularity condition is fulfilled. These results generalize the Gelfand–Naimark representation theorems to classes of $^*$-algebras larger than $C^*$-algebras, and which especially contain $^*$-algebras of unbounded operators. The key to these representation theorems is a new result for Archimedean ordered vector spaces V: If V is $\sigma $-bounded, then the order of V is induced by the extremal positive linear functionals on V.

In this paper, we prove results about solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^p+y^p=z^3$ over various number fields using the modular method. First, by assuming some standard modularity conjecture, we prove an asymptotic result for general number fields of narrow class number one satisfying some technical conditions. Second, we show that there is an explicit bound such that the equation $x^p+y^p=z^3$ does not have a particular type of solution over $K=\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {-d})$, where $d=1,7,19,43,67$ whenever p is bigger than this bound. During the course of the proof, we prove various results about the irreducibility of Galois representations, image of inertia groups, and Bianchi newforms.

We compute the generator rank of a subhomogeneous $C^*\!$-algebra in terms of the covering dimension of the pieces of its primitive ideal space corresponding to irreducible representations of a fixed dimension. We deduce that every $\mathcal {Z}$-stable approximately subhomogeneous algebra has generator rank one, which means that a generic element in such an algebra is a generator.

This leads to a strong solution of the generator problem for classifiable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras: a generic element in each such algebra is a generator. Examples of Villadsen show that this is not the case for all separable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras.

Let G be a p-adic classical group. The representations in a given Bernstein component can be viewed as modules for the corresponding Hecke algebra—the endomorphism algebra of a pro-generator of the given component. Using Heiermann’s construction of these algebras, we describe the Bernstein components of the Gelfand–Graev representation for $G=\mathrm {SO}(2n+1)$, $\mathrm {Sp}(2n)$, and $\mathrm {O}(2n)$.

In Kiukas, Lahti, and Ylinen (2006, Journal of Mathematical Physics 47, 072104), the authors asked the following general question. When is a positive operator measure projection valued? A version of this question formulated in terms of operator moments was posed in Pietrzycki and Stochel (2021, Journal of Functional Analysis 280, 109001). Let T be a self-adjoint operator, and let F be a Borel semispectral measure on the real line with compact support. For which positive integers $p< q$ do the equalities $T^k =\int _{\mathbb {R}} x^k F(\mathrm {d\hspace {.1ex}} x)$, $k=p, q$, imply that F is a spectral measure? In the present paper, we completely solve the second problem. The answer is affirmative if $p$ is odd and $q$ is even, and negative otherwise. The case $(p,q)=(1,2)$ closely related to intrinsic noise operator was solved by several authors including Kruszyński and de Muynck, as well as Kiukas, Lahti, and Ylinen. The counterpart of the second problem concerning the multiplicativity of unital positive linear maps on $C^*$-algebras is also provided.
